Is a New Panda Update Coming Soon?
There are rumblings within SEO circles that a new Panda update – or ‘refresh’ – will hit within the next few weeks.
When Panda first struck, along with its pal Penguin the following year, the Internet was in uproar. The Panda update was a change to Google’s algorithm that lowered the rankings of ‘poor quality’ sites and pages – thin content and duplicate content in particular was targeted. It was thought that the update affected up to 12 percent of all total search results and many websites suddenly had to make a number of alterations after slipping right down the rankings.
And for some, having just recovered from this update, may well have then felt the wrath of the Penguin – which targeted backlinking and keyword manipulation – just over a year later.
Panda Update 2015
Considering these two updates affected the most major areas of search engine optimisation it’s no wonder people have cried ‘is SEO dead?’ consistently since then.
It’s also not surprising then that news of a Panda refresh has got people stirring again. Though Google would no doubt say that if you’re writing engaging, unique content and ensuring a natural backlink profile – things that you should be doing regardless – then there’s never anything to worry about, new updates are always a concern to SEO folk and website owners. It also can’t be said that such changes always work out as they should – when Panda was first rolled out, scrapers and those who had taken duplicate content from elsewhere were in some cases ranking better than the original sources.
What Does the Panda Update Mean for Me?
It’s unsure just what the outcome will be from this new ‘refresh’. It may well be the case that those who suffered from the algorithm the first time around will see some recovery from this. On the other hand new sites may be hit by this fresh data. As with all the previous algorithm changes we can only really wait to see if and what the fallout will be.
